How and why we pray respect to Buddha statue?

Updated: Dec 2, 2018

When Buddha was still alive he never asked his followers to make statues or worship him in images. Instead he taught us to not have any attachment to anything - not even himself.

Buddha said that the best way to worship him was to follow his teachings. And that after he passed away his teachings would take his place.

Since Buddha statues have become a key element for most Buddhists around the world are reminded of his compassion, kindness and his teachings and feel the highest regard for him.

When pray respect to your Buddha statue at home or at the temple, in Thai tradition that has been pass on is to light up 3 incense sticks and 2 candles to pay our respect to the “Triple Gem”

✅What is the “Triple Gem”?

The central focus of inspiration and devotion for Buddhists is the Triple Gem (also known as the Three Treasures and the Three Refuges). These three are Buddha (Lord of Buddha), Dhamma (Buddha Teaching), and Sangha (Buddhist Monks.

Buddha means 'Enlightened One' or 'Awakened One,' and is generally used to refer to the founder of Buddhism. There have been other Buddhas before him, however, and will be other Buddhas in the future.

The word Dhamma (in Sanskrit, Dharma) is often used to refer to the Buddha's teachings, but it also means the eternal Truth which the teachings convey to us. Dhamma is threefold: the Dhamma that we study, that which we practice, and the Dhamma of Realization.

Sangha literally means 'community' or 'assembly.' The word has two meanings in proper Buddhist usage: the community of disciples (whether ordained or not) who have gained Realization of any of the stages of Awakening; and the community of ordained disciples - monks and nuns.
